Welcome to North London U3A!
We are a medium-sized U3A with over 750 members. We cover an area of North London including Archway, Highgate, Hornsey, Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Finchley, Friern Barnet and surrounding areas. We meet largely in members’ homes, but also in various venues in North London, and have no fixed base. We have about 100 Interest Groups, covering subjects from Art to Yoga with many in between Some Groups visit theatres, cinemas, gardens, museums and galleries or go for walks, long and short.
Our Monthly Meetings, currently held in Finchley, always start with coffee and chat, and offer a variety of outside speakers on subjects as varied as Charles Dickens, China’s Cultural Revolution, and Prison Reform. We are a registered charity and aim to be friendly and inclusive.
Our members take part in national Summer Schools, London Study Days and Shared Learning Projects with organisations such as the Museum of London, London Metropolitan Archive and the British Library.
As a general introduction you might like to watch this video first. It is just 5 minutes long and was produced by the national office of U3A. (Use the ‘Full Screen’ button at the bottom right of the video to enlarge the picture.)
The NLU3A serves a slice of London that includes Archway, Highgate, Crouch End, Hornsey, Muswell Hill, Finchley, Friern Barnet, New Southgate. The boundaries however are not rigid and we have members from outside this area. Under the GROUPS label in the Main Menu you can search for those which meet in an area convenient to you by using Postcodes.
Interest Groups meet all over the geographical area of north London. We mostly meet in one another’s homes when the groups are small and do not need great space. Larger groups and those that involve a lot of physical activity meet in rented spaces. Some groups have no fixed home but, for example, meet for outdoor walks and tours, visits to galleries, museums, theatres, etc. Our Monthly Meetings which usually have a guest speaker are currently held in a church hall in Finchley.
Each group has a leader or Coordinator (sometimes two) who organises it and with the group’s participation sets the tone and agenda. We have many members who are experts in their field and share their knowledge and experience generously with us. Many groups do not have an expert leader but simply an enthusiast who is learning and taking part on an equal footing with others in the group. There is not always a need for a professor! In some cases where needed, a professional tutor is employed and members may be asked for an additional payment above the annual membership subscription.
Every member of North London U3A should consider how they can help run the organisation. There are always ways in which you can help – just ask a committee member. We are a Co-operative in education – self-helping and self-managing. Nobody is paid, nobody gains great status. But there is deep satisfaction in seeing this organisation working well. We aim to be a lively institution where every member feels at home and finds fulfilment in what they do.
During 2015 we have developed a set of Aims and objectives for our U3A.
We are required by the charity commisioners to have a formal constitution. This was last amended at the 2014 AGM, when some minor updates were made. You can read or download it Constitution-2014.
