During the meetings, which begin in September and continue until Easter, we will consider how spoken and written languages – especially but not only English – functions in various situations, and its relationship to thinking and to ourselves as individuals and members of society. Among the topics will be how we use background knowledge to “read between the lines”, language in relation to gender and how children learn to talk. The meetings will be more like discussions or seminars than lectures.
