Technology and Changing Times

How are rapidly evolving technologies affecting our lives, what are the latest developments, and what changes lie ahead?  We keep a communal watch for significant news in areas such as AI, robotics, genomics and Internet/social media and likely impacts on healthcare, the environment, trade, transport, jobs etc.

Additionally, there is a small group which meets face to face on a Friday morning, but this is currently at capacity due to the necessity to follow Covid advice.

Film in the Cinema

We meet on the 3rd Friday of each month, exclusively on zoom and at present are a small group of 6 people. Our discussions last approximately an hour, sometimes a little longer.

We try to select one or two suitable films to discuss each month, one of which preferably should be on a streaming platform or terrestrial TV as not all our members are currently going to the cinema.

Some of us have been in the group a long time but new members with a passion for film are always welcome. Please contact Marta Brown as shown above if you would like more information, or would like to join.

History – A Sideways Look

This group looks ‘Sideways’ at history. We choose a particular period and examine what was happening at that period worldwide. We are currently covering the period 1850-1914 which will give us the opportunity of looking at European colonialism in Africa and Asia, the American civil war and its aftermath, industrialism, the rise of socialism and much besides. Although none of us are experts, we do expect all group members to participate in discussions and researching/presenting topics of their choice. Michael Johns leads the group. Access to the internet and email essential.

If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Michael Johns

Modern and Contemporary Literature

We are continuing our study of the past Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes, interspersed with the work of his contemporaries, other late 20C poets and current 21C poets, with occasional visits elsewhere, for example Shakespeare’s sonnets.

All members are expected to read (aloud), explore and discuss the selected poems.

Suggestions for the programmes or any new areas of study are made by individual group members and always discussed and acted upon.  New members are welcome.
